It’s that time of year. The holidays are days away. Time to do the last minute full holiday clean before family arrives, pull out those decorations and light up your home with holiday cheer!
As you start your ultimate deep cleaning and decorating, here are some tips, tricks and reminders in order to keep you safe this holiday season.
Moving Furniture
You’ve done the surface cleaning all summer and fall. It’s time to get under and around those larger furniture pieces. Those couches, tables, desks and big holiday gifts can be too heavy for a one person job. Do not be afraid to ask for help when you can and NEVER try to lift anything that is too heavy for you to lift alone. Try to make a plan for yourself or with your helper on where you want the furniture to go before you move it.
When your plan is set and you get ready to lift, remember to maintain good lifting mechanics.
- Give yourself a good foundation and keep your feet shoulder width apart
- Keep your back straight, shoulders back and try to look straight ahead
- Bend at your knees, NOT at your back
- Make sure to keep any items close to your body to reduce stresses on your back
- If your object is something that needs to be slid, rather than carried, take every opportunity to push rather than pull
Using Ladders
According to the National Safety Council, 90,000 people receive emergency room treatment from ladder related injuries every year and ladder accidents have increased by 50 percent over the past 10 years. Before you jump to cleaning those windows, hanging your lights and placing your ornaments on the walls and on top of the tree, keep these tips and tricks in mind to keep yourself safe:
- Never lean a ladder on or against an unstable surface. If you have uneven ground where you want to set your ladder up, use a stable surface such as plywood to give yourself an even ground.
- Ladder should be placed 1 foot away from the surface it is resting on for every 4 feet of the ladders height.
- Always maintain 3 points of contact while on the ladder – either 2 hands and 1 foot or 2 feet and 1 hand
- Do NOT stand higher than the third rung from the top of the ladder
- Never lean or overreach while you are on the ladder, get back down and reposition the ladder to where you want it.
