As the disease progresses, it may become difficult to control movement. It may also result in tremors, slowed movement patterns, muscular stiffness, and impaired balance. Recent estimates indicate approximately one million Americans are living with Parkinson&#8217;s Disease. In addition, 60,000 people in the US are newly diagnosed each year.<br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CqEwPqUO1Bw\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\nRecent <strong>research<\/strong> in humans and animals shows that <strong>exercise <\/strong>may not only help with movement but may also prevent or delay the progression of <strong>Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/strong>. The clinicians at <strong>WWS Physical Therapy <\/strong>have extensive knowledge in providing a variety of effective methods and exercise programs to target the specific challenges in diagnosing Parkinson\u2019s Disease. Two methods that WWS Physical Therapy clinicians are certified in to address Parkinson&#8217;s Disease are <strong>LSVT BIG<\/strong> and <strong>PWR <\/strong><strong>Parkinson Wellness Recovery.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"wwspt-content-box\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>I. LSVT BIG:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>We Focus on three areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle; text-align: justify;\">\n<li>BIGNESS &#8211; the size of your movement<\/li>\n<li>MODE- exercise or the program requires intense exercise and very high effort!\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>On a scale of 0-10, you have to work as hard as a 7 or 8 throughout your session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>CALIBRATION &#8211; this is when your brain accepts that movements that feel too big are normal!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>IT REQUIRES <\/strong>a significant amount of effort from the person with Parkinson\u2019s disease. The program focuses on both improved walking and a personal goal that you choose. There are 16 sessions: 4 days each week for four weeks. Sessions are 1 hour with little to no rest periods. There is mandatory daily homework and carryover exercises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wwspt-content-box\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>II. PWR Parkinson Wellness Recovery:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A physical therapy approach that utilizes current scientific research. It is a more personalized treatment addressing slowness of movement, stiffness, postural instability\/falls, and freezing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Exercise is a physiological tool to help protect, repair, and optimize the brain function of individuals with Parkinson&#8217;s Disease. The PWR Program addresses motor and cognitive issues through the four building block movements. The core of the PWR program is these four moves; PWR up, Rock, Twist, and Step. These moves are incorporated into different challenge levels and used to work on a patient\u2019s primary issues, emphasizing large amplitude, intense movements that target posture, trunk flexibility, weight shifting, and walking. In addition, voice control, finger dexterity, and arm motion are addressed.
