After a year of anticipation following the 2020 Olympics postponement due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have been eagerly watching almost all of the Olympic Sports competitions. And, seeing the Olympians compete in so many of these events has ignited the Athlete in many of us.
But along with the excitement of returning to the sport comes the potential injury, and some of the most commonly occurring injuries in recreational sports are:
- Golfer’s Elbow – pain in the tendons of the inside of the elbow that occurs after overuse and inflammation. Warm-up and stretching are beneficial in preventing injury. This injury often occurs as a result of overuse, so stopping at the sign of pain may be an effective way in preventing further irritation.
- Tennis Elbow – inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow that results in pain. This injury occurs for the same reasons as listed above
- Muscle Strain – commonly known as a pulled muscle, this injury occurs with micro-tearing of a muscle or tendon.
- Sprain – commonly mistaken for a strain, a sprain occurs when a ligament is over-stretched. The ankle is one of the most commonly occurring locations of strain.
If your injury is not severe then conservative treatment may be effective in managing symptoms. During the first 48 hours following an injury, R.I.C.E. is recommended by doctors and trainers alike.
- Rest – avoid painful activity and stop using the injured body part.
- Ice – use an ice pack on the injured body part for intervals of 20 minutes every few hours.
- Compression – surround the injured area with compression or ACE wraps to manage the swelling
- Elevation – elevate the limb above heart level with a pillow or wedge
If the symptoms persist and conservative treatment fails then it is important to seek medical attention.
