June 21st was International Yoga Day …selected because it is the Summer Solstice. There are many types of yoga and most start with a “Sun Salutation”, praising the sun and the day. It makes sense that on the longest day of the year the sun is shining the longest to celebrate yoga and the sun. I believe yoga has a lot to offer anyone who needs to move! Obviously, that applies to all of us!
There are so many choices; “Hatha” which is the most basic, simple form of yoga is a good way to start to learn the basics. “SVOOPA” is restoration yoga for those with disability or restrictions using pillows and props to maintain postures. “Vinyasa” and “Asthanga” are more energetic types that allow for more strength and lengthening of the spine and extremities. Then, for those who like it hot like me, there’s Bikram Yoga, which is done in a hot room.
The benefits of yoga are many; including postural alignment, improved balance, core stability, cardiovascular conditioning and last but not least, meditation. Once one learns the pattern of the type of yoga he/she chooses, then one can focus on clearing of the mind.
There are many choices of exercise for conditioning, strength for muscles, but I believe yoga is an exercise to build our nervous system, brain and spinal cord from our finger and toes. It opens the spine and the mind for a healthier lifestyle and exercise.
Try it! I think you will like it!
